On a southwest-facing slope in the uplands of County Tipperary, with commanding views across the surrounding countryside, stands a 19th-century cottage and walled farmyard that mark the former location of Lisnamrock Castle.

The castle itself has completely vanished from the landscape, though historical records paint a vivid picture of what once stood here. The Civil Survey of 1654-6 described it as ‘a small castle with an old large bawne & two or three thatcht houses within the bawne’, with Edmond Marnell recorded as its owner in 1640. A mill powered by a small stream stood within musket shot of the castle walls, and traces of what might be its millrace can still be detected in the landscape today.

The castle’s disappearance is likely explained by the practical recycling of its stone; the current walled farmyard and orchard that occupy the site were probably constructed from the castle’s rubble. However, these walls show no signs of medieval construction techniques that would be expected from a defensive bawn wall, measuring only 0.6 metres thick without the characteristic base-batter or other defensive features typical of the period. Local historian John Davis White noted in 1892 that the castle had been built about 100 metres south of an older house at Lisnamrock, providing one of the few clues to its precise location, now marked only by a large tree and well house.

The castle’s most notable resident was Lieutenant Charles Langley, who played a role in the siege of Clonmel during the turbulent 17th century. His involvement in this significant military event connects this now-vanished stronghold to the broader sweep of Irish history during the Confederate and Cromwellian wars. While the physical structure has been lost to time and stone robbing, the site remains a tangible link to the complex history of land ownership, fortification, and conflict that shaped rural Ireland in the early modern period.
