Settlement Sites
Beneath the eastern half of a rath at Drumsheen in County Mayo, local tradition holds that a souterrain lies hidden, though nothing on the surface would ever suggest it.
A souterrain is an underground stone-built passage or chamber, typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, and often found within or near a rath, which is a circular earthen enclosure that once served as a farmstead and dwelling. What makes this particular site quietly peculiar is the total absence of any visible trace. There is no hollow, no depression, no tell-tale collapse in the ground to confirm what people in the area have long believed to be there.
