A weathered stone slab that once stood sentinel in the fields of Killycolman now rests in the grounds of St. Joseph's Church in Rathmullen, carrying with it centuries of mystery.

This 1.6-metre tall standing stone, marked on early Ordnance Survey maps from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bears the faint traces of a Maltese cross inscribed within a circle on one of its faces. Though time has worn away much of the carving, leaving only ghostly outlines of the upper portions visible, the symbol hints at the stone’s possible religious or territorial significance in medieval Ireland.

The stone’s original location adds another layer of intrigue to its story. According to records held by the National Museum of Ireland, it once marked the entrance to a souterrain; one of those enigmatic underground passages that dot the Irish landscape. These artificial caves, typically dating from the early medieval period, served various purposes from storage to refuge, though their exact uses often remain debatable among archaeologists. Today, no trace of this subterranean feature remains visible in the gently sloping pasture where the stone once stood, leaving only archival records and local memory to attest to its existence.

The relocation of the stone to church grounds represents a common fate for many of Ireland’s prehistoric and early historic monuments, where Victorian and later antiquarians sought to preserve these artefacts by moving them to what they considered safer locations. While this practice saved many stones from destruction, it also divorced them from their original contexts, making it harder for modern researchers to understand their original purposes and relationships to the wider landscape.
