Hidden beneath the fields of Murvagh Lower in County Donegal lies a souterrain, one of Ireland's mysterious underground passages that date back to the early medieval period.

These subterranean structures, found throughout Ireland but particularly common in Counties Cork, Kerry, and Donegal, were carved from earth and stone to create secret chambers and tunnels. While their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, they likely served as storage spaces for food and valuables, temporary refuges during raids, or perhaps held ritual significance for the communities that built them between the 6th and 12th centuries.

The Murvagh Lower souterrain remains largely undocumented in publicly accessible records, though it forms part of Ireland’s rich archaeological landscape that the Archaeological Survey of Ireland continues to catalogue. Like many of these underground features, it would have been constructed by digging into the earth and lining the passages with stone walls and lintels, creating a dry, cool environment perfect for storing perishable goods. The entrances to souterrains were often concealed within ringforts or other settlements, making them difficult to spot from above ground.
