Settlement Sites
Beneath the townland of Sheeaun in County Clare, an underground stone-lined passage lies largely unexamined by the wider public.
Souterrains, which are man-made tunnels or chambers typically constructed during the early medieval period in Ireland, were built for a variety of purposes, most likely for food storage, refuge, or concealment. They are found across the island in considerable numbers, yet individual examples in smaller rural townlands often go unremarked, their entrances overgrown or collapsed, their histories unwritten beyond a name on a map and a monument number in a national register.
