Whilst nothing remains visible today, the site’s significance persists through historical records; early Ordnance Survey maps from the 1st and 2nd editions marked it simply as ‘Standing Stone’, whilst the 3rd edition noted it as ‘Gallan (site of)’, using the Irish term for such monuments.

These solitary stones, erected during prehistoric times, served various purposes for ancient communities across Ireland, from territorial markers to ceremonial sites. The Edenacarnan South stone would have stood as a silent sentinel over the surrounding countryside for thousands of years before eventually succumbing to time, weather, or human intervention. Its absence leaves us to wonder about its original height, shape, and the hands that raised it.

The site’s documentation forms part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983 by Brian Lacey and his team of archaeologists. This survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic Period through to the 17th century, preserving knowledge of sites like this one where physical evidence has been lost but historical memory endures through careful archaeological recording.
