Standing stone, Fegart, Co. Donegal
Like thousands of other ancient sites across the country, this solitary stone marker has stood sentinel over the Donegal landscape for millennia, its original purpose lost to time. Standing stones, or galláin as they’re known in Irish, were erected during the Bronze Age and Iron Age for various reasons; some marked burial sites, others served as territorial boundaries, and many likely held ritual or astronomical significance for the communities that raised them.
