Stone Monuments
On the Ordnance Survey maps of Killoe in County Kerry, a standing stone is marked within the interior of a rath, the old Irish term for a circular earthen enclosure, typically the remains of an early medieval farmstead.
The stone even has a name of sorts, recorded under the Irish word "gallaun", the common term for a single upright megalith. There is just one problem: the stone is not there. When surveyors went to verify what the maps had long promised, they found no trace of it.
