Stone Monuments

Standing stone, Oldtown, Co. Donegal

In the low-lying fields beside the River Swilly in Oldtown, County Donegal, once stood an ancient standing stone that has since vanished from the landscape.

Though no physical traces remain today, this prehistoric monument was significant enough to be recorded on the first and second editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, where it was marked simply as 'Standing Stone'. By the time the third edition was produced, the monument had already disappeared, leading cartographers to mark the location as 'Gallan (site of)'; a poignant reminder of what had been lost.

Standing stones, or gallans as they're known in Irish, are amongst Ireland's most enigmatic prehistoric monuments, typically dating from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period. These solitary sentinels served various purposes throughout history; some marked burial sites, others delineated territorial boundaries, whilst many may have held ritual or astronomical significance for the communities that erected them. The Oldtown stone's position near the River Swilly suggests it may have served as a waymarker or boundary stone, taking advantage of the natural corridor created by the river valley.

The disappearance of the Oldtown standing stone between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries reflects a broader pattern of monument loss across Ireland during this period. Agricultural improvements, land clearance, and the repurposing of stone for building materials all contributed to the destruction of countless prehistoric sites. Today, the empty field serves as a reminder that our archaeological heritage exists not just in what survives, but also in the documented memories of what once stood; silent witnesses to thousands of years of human activity along the banks of the Swilly.
