Stone circle – five-stone, Tullig, Co. Cork

At the northern foot of Musheramore Mountain, tucked between the Owenbaun and Mushera Rivers in mid-Cork, there is a monument that no longer exists.

What once stood here was in all probability a five-stone circle, a format particular to the Cork and Kerry region in which five upright stones are arranged in a tight ring, typically with a large recumbent or axial stone opposite a pair of portal stones. By the time anyone thought to make a formal record of it, it was already gone, destroyed sometime shortly before 1933.

The loss was noted by Seán Ó Nualláin, whose 1984 survey of stone circles in the Cork and Kerry region catalogued the site on the basis of earlier accounts. Five-stone circles are among the smaller and less celebrated members of a broader tradition of prehistoric stone monument-building in Munster, but they are a recognised and distinct type, and their distribution is concentrated enough to be archaeologically meaningful. What makes this particular absence quietly interesting is that it did not stand alone. Roughly 450 metres to the south-west lie a gallán, a single standing stone, and the site of another possible stone circle, suggesting this corner of the Musheramore uplands was once a more substantial ceremonial or ritual landscape. The pasture that now occupies the site gives no indication of any of this.

There is little for a visitor to find at the spot itself, which is perhaps the point. The surrounding landscape, with the Owenbaun and Mushera Rivers framing the lower slopes of the mountain, still carries the geography that made this a meaningful place to whoever raised the stones. The nearby gallán and the second circle site to the south-west remain on record, and the broader area repays attention for anyone interested in how prehistoric monuments cluster in upland terrain.
