Prehistoric site – lithic scatter, Inishtrahull, Co. Donegal

On the remote island of Inishtrahull, off the coast of County Donegal, rabbits have become unlikely archaeologists.

Around the crumbling walls of a 19th century cottage, their persistent burrowing and quarrying activities have brought something remarkable to light; an ancient scatter of worked flint pieces that tell a much older story than the ruins themselves. These stone tools and flakes, exposed by the rabbits' excavations, represent a prehistoric lithic scatter that predates the cottage by thousands of years.

The flint pieces aren't just random stones; they're evidence of deliberate human craftsmanship from Ireland's distant past. Prehistoric peoples chose this northernmost inhabited island for tool production, carefully knapping flint to create implements for hunting, cutting, and scraping. The concentration of these artefacts around what would later become the cottage site suggests this particular spot held significance long before any permanent structures were built here, perhaps offering shelter from Atlantic winds or providing a good vantage point across the surrounding waters.

What makes this discovery particularly intriguing is the layered history it reveals. The Victorian cottage ruins, themselves a testament to the hardy souls who once tried to make a living on this windswept isle, sit atop evidence of far earlier occupation. Thanks to the industrious rabbit population, visitors can now spot these ancient worked stones scattered across the ground surface, each piece a tangible link to Ireland's Stone Age inhabitants who first recognised Inishtrahull's potential as a place worth settling, however temporarily.
