Round Tower at Dysert O'Dea, Co. Clare

Round Tower at Dysert O’Dea, Co. Clare

One of Clare's most atmospheric medieval ruins, this fire-scarred round tower still guards the ancient graveyard at Dysert O'Dea after nearly nine centuries.

Round Tower at Dysert O'Dea, Co. Clare

This medieval round tower stands in the graveyard at Dysert O’Dea, just two meters northwest of the site’s Romanesque church. Though heavily damaged over the centuries, one section of the tower still rises to an impressive 18 meters, tapering as it climbs skyward.

The tower’s base measures 18.5 meters around (about 6 meters in diameter) and was built from roughly laid limestone blocks, with walls over a meter thick. The original entrance sits on the eastern side; a round-headed doorway with slanted sides that’s raised 2 meters above ground level, as was typical for these defensive structures. This doorway remains in good condition despite the tower’s age.
Near the top of the surviving wall on the northwest side, you’ll find a single window with a distinctive ogee (S-curved) head. There’s also evidence of a floor division above ground level, marked by a rebate in the stonework.

At ground level on the northwest side, there’s a breach in the wall that may have been created as a later entrance when the medieval window was added higher up. A pillar or section of masonry supports this opening. The external wall around this breach shows clear signs of fire damage, hinting at the tower’s turbulent past.

The round tower is protected as a national monument under State care.
