Forge, Clonroad Beg, Co. Clare
In the heart of Ennis's historic town, somewhere along Station Road, stood a forge that once rang with the sound of metal being shaped by skilled hands. Historical records from 1700 mention this site specifically, with the Corporation Books of Ennis documenting a forge operated by a man named Patrick Roughtoor.

This reference, highlighted in Ó Dálaigh’s 2012 research, offers us a rare glimpse into the industrial life of Ennis at the turn of the 18th century. While the exact location of Roughtoor’s forge has been lost to time, it has been catalogued in the archaeological record as site CL033-082.
Blacksmiths like Roughtoor would have been essential to daily life in towns like Ennis, crafting everything from horseshoes to household implements and agricultural tools. These forges served as both workshops and social hubs where locals would gather whilst waiting for repairs or commissions, exchanging news and stories as the blacksmith worked at his anvil.
