Perched atop a steep hill in the rolling pastureland of County Galway sits the remains of Knockash Hillfort, a massive ancient enclosure that sprawls across approximately 170 metres of the summit.

Discovered through aerial reconnaissance in June 1986, this impressive site reveals itself through a low stony bank that curves around much of the hilltop, measuring just over three metres wide and rising about a metre high on its outer face. The bank is most clearly visible along the eastern side, whilst the southern and south-southwestern sections show only intermittent traces of the original structure. Nature itself completes the enclosure, with the hill’s precipitous natural slopes forming a formidable barrier from the south-southwest round to the northwest.

The enclosing bank, though weathered by centuries, still hints at the site’s former significance. A single entrance gap, three metres wide, breaks the perimeter at the east-northeast, providing what would have been the primary access point to the interior. Inside, the ground is notably uneven and rocky, typical of hilltop settlements where natural bedrock often lies close to the surface. The construction technique, using locally sourced stone to create a substantial boundary bank, reflects the building methods commonly employed during the Iron Age period when many Irish hillforts were established.

Just 45 metres to the east lies a cashel, a smaller stone fort that may have been contemporary with the hillfort or constructed at a different period. This proximity suggests the area held strategic or cultural importance over an extended timeframe, possibly serving defensive, ceremonial, or settlement purposes for the communities who once inhabited this part of Galway. The site was documented by the Galway Archaeological Survey at University College Galway and added to the archaeological record in December 2017, ensuring its preservation in Ireland’s rich catalogue of ancient monuments.
