Rock art, Magheranaul, Co. Donegal

In a field in Magheranaul, County Donegal, where prehistoric sites DON 23 and 24 once stood before their destruction, lies a remarkable example of ancient rock art carved into a flat outcrop of bedrock.

The stone surface slopes gently southward at about 10 degrees and bears the scars of more recent activity; quarrying has cut away its eastern edge to form a ditch, whilst construction work on its western side likely destroyed the neighbouring archaeological sites. Despite this damage, the rock face preserves an intricate collection of prehistoric carvings that offer a glimpse into the artistic traditions of Ireland’s distant past.

The artwork consists of at least nine single cup marks of varying sizes, alongside several more elaborate designs featuring the distinctive cup and ring motifs characteristic of Atlantic rock art. Moving from south to north across the outcrop, four particularly notable designs stand out. The two southernmost carvings display an unusual keyhole pattern, where a central cup is surrounded by two concentric rings with gaps at the southeast. Short lines or ‘tails’ connect the rings on either side of these gaps, creating the keyhole effect, with notably large spaces between the central cups and inner rings. Further north, after crossing a natural crack in the rock, two more designs appear: one featuring a cup with two complete rings and three parallel grooves extending northeast, and another with a large, deep cup surrounded by closely spaced rings and decorated bands.

This fourth and most complex design shows particular sophistication, with both rings having gaps at the southwest that are flanked by carved grooves or ‘tails’ extending outward. Between these grooves lies a decorated passage containing additional motifs including a small dot, a partial cup and ring, and ten faint parallel grooves. The entire assemblage, documented in detail by Van Hoek in 1988, represents a significant example of Neolithic or Bronze Age rock art, though centuries of weathering have left most of the carvings considerably worn. The site serves as both a testament to prehistoric artistic expression and a reminder of the ongoing challenges in preserving Ireland’s archaeological heritage in the face of modern development.
