This circular earthwork, measuring 27.75 metres in internal diameter, once stood as a defensive homestead dating back to Ireland’s early medieval period. Though time and agricultural progress have taken their toll; modern field boundaries and drainage systems have cut through portions of the structure; the site still retains its distinctive circular footprint and rises up to 1.5 metres above the surrounding fields.

The ringfort sits strategically on the crest of a low ridge, a position that would have offered its inhabitants clear views across the countryside whilst providing natural drainage for their settlement. Today, the top of the earthwork has been flattened, likely through centuries of farming activity, and the land continues to serve as pasture. Despite these modifications, the site remains a tangible link to Ireland’s rural past, when such fortified farmsteads dotted the landscape, housing extended families and their livestock within protective earthen banks.

This particular rath forms part of County Donegal’s rich archaeological heritage, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which catalogues field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Like thousands of similar sites across Ireland, it represents the everyday lives of early Irish farming communities; people who shaped the land, established territorial boundaries, and created settlements that would endure, in one form or another, for over a millennium.
