This subcircular enclosure, measuring 50 metres in internal diameter, represents one of the more elaborate examples of ringfort construction in the area. The site consists of a substantial earthen bank surrounding the central area, followed by a defensive ditch or fosse that runs one to two metres wide, then a second bank and fosse, and finally a small outer bank; a triple-ring defence system that would have made this a formidable stronghold in its day.

Today, the ancient fortification presents a somewhat different picture from its original state. The defensive ditches have largely silted up over the centuries and are now covered with rushes, whilst the southern half of the site has become badly overgrown with vegetation. The outermost bank has almost disappeared beneath a tangle of bushes, making it difficult to trace the full extent of the original defences. Despite these changes, the basic structure of this impressive earthwork remains clearly visible, particularly when viewed from above or in winter when vegetation dies back.

Archaeological testing carried out in 2005 approximately 200 metres south-east of the rath revealed no significant finds, suggesting that the immediate area around the fort may not have been intensively occupied in ancient times. The site appears on Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps simply marked as ‘Rathmore’, and continues to stand as a testament to the engineering skills of Ireland’s early medieval inhabitants, who chose this strategic ridge-top location for what was likely an important local stronghold.
