What survives today is a circular heap of stones approximately 30 metres across, with a distinctive central depression measuring 9 metres in diameter. This stone fort, known locally as a cashel, once stood as an impressive structure with walls several feet thick and rising to about 5 feet in height, encompassing an area roughly 100 feet in diameter according to archaeological surveys by O. Davies.

The site bears evidence of having been substantially rebuilt at some point in its long history, suggesting it remained significant to local communities across multiple periods. Its strategic placement on rocky terrain, surrounded by natural stone outcrops, would have provided both defensive advantages and ready building materials for its original constructors. These cashels served as fortified homesteads during Ireland’s early medieval period, typically housing extended families or small communities within their protective stone walls.

Today, though reduced to foundation stones and rubble, this Kilbarron cashel remains an important piece of Donegal’s archaeological heritage. The site was documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. While time and weather have taken their toll, the surviving stonework continues to mark this ancient settlement’s place in the Irish landscape.
