In the rolling pastures of Derryvane, County Donegal, there once stood an ancient monument that has long since vanished from the landscape.

Marked on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps as ‘Standing Stone’ and later noted as ‘Standing Stone (site of)’ on the 3rd edition, this prehistoric marker has left no visible traces for modern visitors to discover. The site sits on gently sloping ground that descends towards the southeast, now given over entirely to grazing land.

Standing stones, or galláin as they’re known in Irish, are among Ireland’s most enigmatic prehistoric monuments. These solitary uprights were erected across the country during the Bronze Age, roughly between 2500 and 500 BCE, though their exact purpose remains a matter of scholarly debate. Some may have served as territorial markers or route indicators; others possibly held ritual significance or marked burial sites. The Derryvane stone, like many of its counterparts across Donegal, stood sentinel over this landscape for millennia before eventually succumbing to time, weather, or human interference.

Though the stone itself has disappeared, its former presence was significant enough to warrant careful documentation by the Ordnance Survey cartographers of the 19th century. The site was later included in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which catalogued the county’s field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. While visitors today will find only an empty field where this ancient monument once stood, the location remains part of Donegal’s rich archaeological record, a reminder that not all history leaves physical traces we can touch.
