Enclosure, Cloghernagh, Co. Donegal

On the western facing slope of rising land in Cloghernagh, County Donegal, sits a curious D-shaped stone enclosure that offers a glimpse into Ireland's ancient past.

The structure makes clever use of the natural landscape, with a west-facing rock outcrop forming its eastern wall whilst semicircular drystone wall footings complete the enclosure by curving around from this natural barrier. Located in what is now flat pasture, this remnant of early settlement sits just 130 metres west of a hilltop cashel, suggesting this area once held significant importance for its inhabitants.

What makes this site particularly intriguing is its connection to a broader agricultural landscape. The enclosure is embraced by the remains of a curvilinear drystone field wall that sweeps from south through west to north, creating a protective arc around the D-shaped structure. These field boundaries appear to be contemporary with the enclosure itself, indicating this wasn’t an isolated dwelling but part of an organised farming system that shaped these upland slopes centuries ago.

Though weathered by time, these stone footings still trace out the lives of those who once worked this land, building with the materials at hand and adapting their structures to the natural contours of the hillside. The relationship between the enclosure, its surrounding field system, and the nearby cashel paints a picture of a complex settlement pattern that once dotted these Donegal hills.
