Known as a souterrain, this hidden chamber system appears on the first and second editions of Ordnance Survey maps from the 19th century, marked alongside a fort. Though the original features are no longer visible above ground, remnants of this ancient site continue to spark archaeological interest.

The souterrain’s entrance was once marked by a peculiar slab-built structure, which still partially stands today despite considerable collapse. According to an 1889 description by Kinahan, this above-ground construction served as the entry point to the underground complex. Visitors would have descended through a narrow perpendicular shaft, roughly 60 centimetres square, which dropped into a cramped passage below. This tunnel, measuring about 75 centimetres wide and 90 centimetres high, was ingeniously crafted using both natural rock cutting and constructed stone walls, eventually opening into a sizeable rectangular chamber topped with flagstone roofing.

The entire complex was built into the southern section of an irregular rock platform, strategically positioned near quality pastureland whilst remaining concealed from the higher ground to the south. This placement suggests careful consideration of both agricultural needs and defensive concerns, typical of souterrains throughout Ireland. These underground structures, dating from the early medieval period, served multiple purposes; from food storage and refuge during raids to potentially ritualistic uses, representing a fascinating glimpse into how our ancestors adapted their landscape for survival and community needs.
