Standing stone, Bunnamayne, Co. Donegal

On a gentle rise near a tributary of the Skeage river in County Donegal once stood an ancient standing stone, a silent sentinel that watched over the cultivated fields for countless generations.

Standing stone, Bunnamayne, Co. Donegal

This prehistoric monument, carefully documented on Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, met its end around two decades ago; whether through agricultural activity, neglect, or deliberate removal remains unclear. Its location at Bunnamayne placed it within a landscape rich with archaeological heritage, where such stones often marked ancient boundaries, burial sites, or held ritual significance for Ireland’s early inhabitants.

Standing stones like the one at Bunnamayne are amongst Ireland’s most enigmatic monuments, typically dating from the Bronze Age (2500–500 BCE) though some may be earlier or later. These solitary megaliths, erected by communities whose beliefs and customs are largely lost to time, dot the Irish countryside in their thousands. The Bunnamayne stone’s position near water was typical; many such monuments were deliberately placed near rivers or streams, possibly for ceremonial purposes or as territorial markers visible from afar.

The loss of this particular stone represents a small but significant erosion of Donegal’s archaeological record. Its destruction, noted matter-of-factly in the county’s archaeological survey compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, reminds us how vulnerable these ancient monuments remain despite their having survived millennia. While the stone itself is gone, its memory persists through historical records and maps, preserving at least some knowledge of what once stood on that slight rise above the Skeage’s tributary waters.
