In the rolling countryside of Ardaganny, County Donegal, lies a hidden piece of Ireland's ancient past; a souterrain that has managed to avoid documentation on early Ordnance Survey maps.

Despite the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch maps showing no trace of any cave at this location, the underground structure sits beneath what has long been considered good agricultural land, suggesting our ancestors chose their building sites with careful consideration for both concealment and soil quality.

Souterrains, these enigmatic underground passages and chambers, are found scattered across Ireland and Scotland, with particularly high concentrations in counties like Donegal. Built primarily during the early medieval period, roughly between the 6th and 12th centuries, they served multiple purposes for the communities that constructed them. Some archaeologists believe they were used for food storage, taking advantage of the constant cool temperatures underground to preserve dairy products and grain. Others suggest they provided temporary refuge during raids, whilst some may have held ritual or ceremonial significance.

The Ardaganny souterrain represents just one of hundreds of these structures documented across County Donegal during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey conducted by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. Their work revealed a landscape far richer in archaeological remains than previously understood, with many sites like this one having escaped earlier cartographic surveys. The fact that this particular souterrain went unrecorded on official maps until relatively recently speaks to how much of Ireland’s archaeological heritage remains hidden just beneath the surface, waiting in the very fields that have been farmed for generations.
