In the townland of Churchland Quarters near Carndonagh, County Donegal, a curious collection of early Christian stone monuments once stood exposed to the elements.

This particular spot marks where one of two carved stone sculptures originally flanked a high cross, forming a trinity of medieval artistry that graced the landscape for centuries. The sculptures, along with their companion cross, earned recognition as National Monument number 271, appearing on Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1907 simply marked as ‘Cross’.

The stone sculpture that once stood here features intriguing carved details on multiple faces; the eastern side depicts a human figure whilst the southern face bears abstract designs typical of early Irish Christian art. These weathered stones told their stories to passing generations until concerns about erosion prompted their relocation to safer quarters. Today, visitors won’t find these ancient markers in their original positions, where wind and rain had begun to wear away their carved surfaces.

The monuments now reside under protective cover immediately east of Carndonagh graveyard, where they continue to fascinate those interested in Ireland’s early Christian heritage. The high cross and its two guardian sculptures have been assigned new monument numbers (DG011-035009, DG011-035010, and DG011-035011) in their sheltered location, ensuring these remarkable examples of medieval stone carving remain accessible for study and appreciation. Their move from exposed hillside to covered sanctuary represents a common challenge in Irish archaeology; balancing the authentic experience of monuments in their original landscape with the practical need to preserve them for future generations.
