This modified natural feature, measuring 27 metres northwest to southeast and 22.5 metres southwest to northeast, stands about four metres high and is now covered in trees. The site first appeared on the Ordnance Survey’s 6-inch map marked simply as ‘Fort’, but its history likely stretches back much further. A fosse, or defensive ditch, encircles most of the mound, particularly prominent on the western side where deliberate modification has shaped the mound’s current appearance. Faint traces of an outer bank can still be spotted, whilst the northern boundary follows an old curving field line.

This elevated position overlooking reclaimed lowlands may be the location of Culmacatreine, a small castle or tower house that appears on a map from around 1600. No trace of this structure remains today, though the strategic placement of the site; commanding views across what would have been challenging terrain until the seventeenth century; certainly suggests defensive purposes. The sub-rectangular shape of the mound and its surrounding earthworks point to deliberate fortification, whether as a motte for an early castle or an earlier defensive structure.

Archaeological surveys have documented the site as part of Donegal’s rich heritage of field antiquities, though time and nature have obscured many details. The tree cover that now cloaks the mound makes it difficult to identify any surviving structures, leaving visitors to imagine what defensive works once crowned this strategic height. The transformation of the surrounding landscape from marsh to farmland has further altered the site’s context, but the earthworks remain as testament to centuries of human occupation and modification of this small but significant corner of Donegal.
