In the northeast corner of a Donegal townland, a solitary well marks what may once have been sacred ground.

Known locally as Tempodesha, this unassuming water source sits just metres northwest of where the Ordnance Survey maps indicate a church once stood, though its notation reads simply “Site of”, suggesting the building itself has long since vanished. The well, catalogued rather prosaically as DG027-019, represents one of those tantalising fragments of Ireland’s ecclesiastical past; a place where memory persists even as the physical structures have crumbled away.

The site came to scholarly attention through the work of G.H. Kinahan, who documented it during his surveys of County Donegal in 1889 and 1890. Writing in the Journal of the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland, Kinahan noted with characteristic Victorian brevity that whilst the well called Tempodesha remained, “any old church that may formerly have existed has disappeared.” His observation forms part of a broader catalogue of megalithic and ancient structures in the Barony of Kilmacrenan, compiled during an era when antiquarians were racing to record Ireland’s rapidly disappearing archaeological heritage.

Today, visitors to the area around Raithnigh, also known as Tc An Cheathrú Chaol, will find little to suggest the religious significance this spot once held. The well continues to bubble away, marked on modern maps but otherwise unremarkable to the casual observer. Yet its very name, Tempodesha, hints at its connection to a temple or church, preserving in language what time and weather have erased from the landscape. It stands as a reminder of how Ireland’s sacred geography often survives not in stone and mortar, but in the names we give to springs, fields, and forgotten corners of the countryside.
