Known as Cill an Leabhair, or the Church of the Book, this location supposedly housed a church, graveyard, and holy well, though no visible traces of these features remain today. The land, now part of Church Farm, slopes from north to south and has yielded human bones during ploughing, lending some credence to the oral histories that place a burial ground here.

The site’s connection to St. Colmcille (Columba) adds another layer of intrigue to its history. According to Manus O’Donnell’s 16th-century Life of Colmcille, a holy well dedicated to the saint existed near a hill called Druim na Leabhar, the Ridge of the Books, somewhere in Glen Fanad. The text describes how a spring miraculously burst forth at this location, marked by “a great stone station” commemorating the wonder. Local scholar Énrí Ó Muirgheasa, writing in 1936, suggested this might be the same well associated with the Church Farm site, though he admitted having no first-hand knowledge of its exact location.

Whether this is indeed the miraculous well of Colmcille’s legend or simply another of Donegal’s many sacred springs remains uncertain. What is clear is that this quiet corner of Glen Lower once served as a focal point for worship and burial, its importance preserved not in stone monuments but in the memories and stories passed down through generations of local families. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal has catalogued it amongst the county’s ritual sites, ensuring that even as physical evidence disappears, the historical record of this holy place endures.
