This circular settlement, measuring roughly 80 metres across, was first spotted from above in aerial photographs rather than on the ground; so subtle are its remains that even the detailed Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps of the area failed to record it. When archaeologists visited the site, they found no obvious surface features to mark where this substantial dwelling once stood, yet the aerial views revealed intriguing details: two internal divisions in the southeast quadrant suggest this wasn’t just a simple structure but a carefully planned residence with distinct living spaces.

The site sits on prime agricultural land, the kind of gently undulating terrain that medieval settlers would have prized for both farming and defence. Traces of an old field system can still be detected adjoining the house site, painting a picture of a working farmstead that would have been at the heart of medieval rural life in Donegal. These field boundaries, though worn down by centuries of weather and cultivation, hint at the organised agricultural practices that sustained the household and perhaps the wider community.

What makes this site particularly fascinating is how it demonstrates the invisible archaeology that surrounds us; places where people lived, worked and raised families for generations, now detectable only through careful survey work and a trained eye. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, captured these ephemeral traces before they vanished completely, preserving knowledge of a medieval homestead that might otherwise have been lost to memory.
