Ballynavin Castle in North Tipperary sits on a gentle rise with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside, though what remains today is more country house than fortress.

The original structure dates to around 1650, when it was built by proprietor Cormuck McEgan, but it never quite reached completion. When surveyors documented it just a few years later in 1654, they noted it as a ‘new castle not finished the walls onely standing’, accompanied by a small water mill on a brook, three thatched houses, and ten cottages scattered across the lands.

The castle’s fortunes changed dramatically in the 1800s when it was partially demolished and cleverly incorporated into a Georgian country house around 1780. The transformation preserved some remarkable features; the eastern wall of the current house is believed to be the original 8-foot-thick castle wall, complete with the remnants of a spiral staircase hidden within the structure. The resulting five-bay, two-storey house over basement with attic presents an intriguing architectural timeline, from its medieval bones to its Georgian refinements, including timber sash windows, limestone doorwork with pilasters, and a variety of window styles that hint at its complex building history.

Perhaps the most evocative survivor of the castle’s defensive past is a section of medieval bawn wall attached to the northwest side of the house, complete with a gun loop that once allowed defenders to fire upon approaching threats. The property includes several outbuildings with features ranging from pyramidal slate roofs to segmental-headed carriage arches, whilst a charming double-arched bridge spans the river directly in front of the house, creating a picturesque approach to this fascinating blend of medieval fortification and Georgian domesticity.
