Masonry Castles
Coolbeg Castle sits on the shores of a sea inlet just north of Sligo town, near the village of Drumcliff. Though little remains of the structure today, the site marks the location of what was once a masonry fortification overlooking the water.
The castle's position at this coastal inlet would have provided strategic views across the waterway, a common feature of Irish coastal defences during the medieval period.
