What remains today is primarily the western wall of this tower house, stretching 9.4 metres in length and surviving to first floor level, complete with its defensive base batter. A short section of the northern wall, measuring about 3 metres, still connects to this western fragment, whilst ivy now claims much of the stonework that has endured centuries of Irish weather.

The tower sits within a shallow fosse, or defensive ditch, that measures approximately 71 metres from north to south and 20 metres from east to west. This earthwork likely represents the remains of a bawn; a fortified enclosure that would have originally surrounded the tower house, providing an additional layer of defence and a secure area for livestock and other valuable assets. Such features were common in Irish tower houses, particularly those built during the tumultuous centuries following the Norman invasion.

The castle’s position above the River Robe’s flood plain would have been strategically chosen, offering both defensive advantages and control over the surrounding landscape. Though much reduced from its original form, these ruins continue to mark the landscape as they have for centuries, a testament to the complex patterns of settlement, defence, and territorial control that shaped medieval County Mayo.
