Standing at the northern end of a ridge in Donaghmore, County Laois, this impressive earthen motte rises 7.5 metres high with a flat summit approximately 8 metres across.

The steep-sided mound offers commanding views across the surrounding countryside in all directions, a strategic advantage that would have been particularly valuable to its Norman builders. While only faint traces of its defensive fosse remain visible along the southern approaches, measuring about 5.5 metres wide and just under a metre deep, the structure still dominates the local landscape. Some quarrying on the northwest face has left a small hollow depression on the summit, but otherwise the motte remains largely intact.

The site has an intriguing relationship with the surrounding historical features. Just 30 metres to the southwest, at the base of the ridge, lies St Patrick’s Well, though a large rock was reportedly rolled into it around 1845, sealing it off. The medieval church and graveyard of Donaghmore sit 240 metres to the south-southeast, suggesting this area has been of significance for centuries. Interestingly, while documents from 1571 and 1621 mention a Donaghmore Castle, no trace of it survives today, leaving historians to speculate whether the motte itself might have supported some form of timber fortification, or if the castle was an entirely separate structure that has since vanished.

Archaeological investigation has revealed evidence of water management in the immediate vicinity, including what appears to be an early mill race in the field directly north of the motte. This feature predates another mill race to the west, which is associated with an eighteenth-century maltings in Donaghmore village. The motte was cleverly positioned at the northern end of an esker ridge, with its steepest face to the north. If a bailey ever existed, the flat, elevated fields to the east and southeast would have been the most likely location, though no definitive evidence of one has been found.
