Dromsicane Castle, Dromsicane, Co. Cork

On the edge of a plateau overlooking the Blackwater River valley to the south, Dromsicane Castle stands as a fortified bawn that once protected the Mac Donogh MacCarthys.

This rectangular enclosure measures approximately 27 metres north to south and 37 metres east to west, surrounded by curtain walls that still reach heights of up to 3.8 metres in places. Circular flanking towers mark three of the four corners, though the northeastern tower has almost completely collapsed. The defensive architecture reflects the turbulent times of its construction, with each surviving tower rising three storeys high and featuring an internal diameter of 5 to 5.6 metres.

The towers reveal fascinating defensive details that speak to the castle’s military purpose. Gun loops punctuate all levels of each tower, facing in every direction; these narrow openings measure about 74cm wide and 58cm high on the inside, narrowing to just 5cm by 10cm on the exterior, allowing defenders to fire whilst minimising their exposure to return fire. Joist sockets in the walls indicate where wooden floors once divided the interior spaces, whilst evidence of doorways and drawbar sockets show how the towers were accessed and secured from within the bawn. The first floor of the southwest tower features double-splayed, lintelled windows with recesses for wooden frames, suggesting these upper levels served residential as well as defensive functions.

Today, the site presents a mixture of historical ruins and modern agricultural use. Farm buildings have been constructed against the northeastern corner, with more structures occupying the northern interior of the bawn and a range of deteriorating lean-to buildings running along the inside of the eastern wall. An open slurry pit runs the full length of the northern curtain wall on the outside. The original entrance to the bawn likely stood near the southern end of the western wall, where an 8-metre section has since collapsed. According to the 18th-century historian Charles Smith, a high square tower once stood at the centre of the enclosure but had already been demolished by 1750, adding another layer to the castle’s long history of construction, use, and decay.
