The site consists of a raised rectangular platform measuring approximately 18.8 metres east to west and 18.6 metres north to south, elevated about half a metre above the surrounding ground. This raised area is bordered by wide, shallow ditches on its eastern and western sides, each roughly 0.6 metres deep, which would have served as defensive fosses in the structure’s active years.

Though no building survives above ground, the earthwork’s form suggests this was once the site of a defensive structure, possibly associated with the nearby Kilbeg Castle. Stones are partially visible at the northeast corner of the platform, hinting at the foundations that once supported walls or other structures. The rectangular shape and defensive ditches are characteristic of Anglo-Norman fortifications that dotted the Cork countryside from the 12th century onwards, when such earthworks often served as mottes, ringworks, or platforms for timber or stone buildings.

Today, the site offers a glimpse into medieval defensive architecture through its earthen remains. The careful preservation of the platform’s dimensions and the surviving fosses demonstrate how medieval builders shaped the landscape to create defendable positions, even on sloping ground. These earthworks, recorded in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, represent the kind of modest but significant medieval sites that pepper the Irish countryside; places where local power was exercised and communities were protected during turbulent centuries.
