In the rolling countryside of County Galway, about 100 metres south of a stream, stand the remains of Killure Castle.

Killure Castle, Killure Castle, Co. Galway

This rectangular tower house, measuring 8.8 metres in length and 4.9 metres in width internally, rises to three storeys despite centuries of weathering and neglect. The castle sits within what was once a rectangular bawn, a fortified enclosure typical of Irish tower houses, which stretched approximately 40 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south. Today, you can still trace the bawn’s outline through a curving scarp edge running from northeast to southeast, and an earthen bank continuing from the southeast to northwest corners.

The castle’s eastern wall contains its main entrance, a pointed arch doorway that’s been partially robbed of its stone over the years. What makes this entrance particularly interesting is its defensive features; a gun loop built into the southern door jamb would have allowed defenders to fire upon unwelcome visitors, whilst a murder hole above the entrance lobby provided another line of defence. Just inside, the ground floor divides into a guardroom to the north, equipped with a cross loop facing east and a circular loop in the north wall, whilst a spiral staircase winds upward from the southern side.

The upper floors reveal the typical layout of an Irish tower house, with each level containing a main chamber and a smaller subsidiary room to the east. Stone vault remnants above the second floor’s subsidiary chamber hint at the castle’s original construction quality. The second floor also features a mural passage running through the southern wall, likely used for defence or communication between rooms. Throughout the tower, various window styles mark different periods or purposes; some are simple rectangular or round headed slits for defence, whilst others are proper single light windows with decorative ogee heads, suggesting areas where comfort was considered alongside security.
