Liberty Castle, Liberty, Co. Roscommon

In the gently rolling landscape south of Derrymacky in County Roscommon stands what remains of Liberty Castle, a modest fortification that once commanded this boggy terrain.

The castle appears on the Strafford map from around 1636, marked as sitting in a moss or bog in what may have been called Derrylagh. During the turbulent 17th century, this entire area formed part of the Bishop of Meath’s extensive landholdings, recorded in both 1641 and throughout the 1660s.

Today, only fragments of this rectangular structure survive to hint at its former purpose. The eastern wall stretches for about four metres, joining with a two-metre section of the northern wall; together they rise to approximately 4.5 metres in height with walls a metre thick. Archaeological surveys indicate the original building measured roughly 8.6 metres east to west and 6.5 metres north to south, though the western and southern walls have largely collapsed into rubble cairns that barely reach 35 centimetres in height.

The Ordnance Survey maps of 1837 and 1924-25 both mark this small structure, labelling it “Liberty Castle” in Gothic lettering, suggesting its local significance persisted well into the modern era. At only about five metres square on these later maps, it appears the castle had already diminished considerably from its original footprint, perhaps serving as little more than a landmark or curiosity by the 19th century.
