Macdermots Castle, Ballynagran, Co. Wicklow

This medieval fortification consists of a large rectangular enclosure measuring 37 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, protected by defensive earthworks that have survived centuries of Irish weather. The site is surrounded by a distinctive flat-bottomed fosse, essentially a defensive ditch, that varies between 7.5 and 10 metres wide and reaches depths of up to 0.8 metres.

The earthen bank that accompanies this fosse forms an impressive boundary, particularly substantial on the western, northern and eastern sides where it stretches 8 to 10 metres wide and rises to heights of 0.6 metres. The southern approach, where the actual castle structure stands, features a narrower 5-metre bank. Here, visitors can still identify the original entrance; a causeway bridges the fosse whilst a corresponding gap in the bank marks where defenders once controlled access to the stronghold. Two curious hollows on either side of this entrance, projecting inward from the fosse, likely played a role in the castle’s defensive strategy, perhaps serving as additional obstacles or positions for guards.

Protected since 1940 under Ireland’s National Monuments Acts, this site offers a tangible connection to medieval Wicklow’s turbulent past. Archaeological surveys conducted by O’Flanagan in 1928 and Price in 1936 first documented these features in detail, with the site later being included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow published in 1997. Though time has reduced the once-formidable fortification to earthworks and foundations, the castle’s strategic positioning and surviving defensive features still tell the story of medieval power and protection in the Irish countryside.
