On a plateau overlooking the Funshion River, about 200 metres to the south, stand the weathered remains of Manning Castle.

Manning Castle, Manning, Co. Cork

What survives today is largely fragmentary; a rectangular tower reduced to roughly three metres in height, with its southern wall stretching 8.2 metres and partial returns of both the western and eastern walls. The eastern wall preserves what appears to be the southern jamb of a doorway, with traces of what might have been a guard room just inside. These ruins sit at the southwest corner of what was once a rectangular bawn, its grass-covered foundations still traceable as they define an area measuring approximately 55 metres east to west and 46 metres north to south.

The castle grounds reveal more than just the tower’s skeleton. Foundation outlines of other structures can be detected within the bawn’s perimeter, hinting at the complex of buildings that once occupied this defensive enclosure. The site’s stones didn’t go to waste when the castle fell into disrepair; both masonry and some of the original oak rafters were repurposed around 1750 for the construction of Manning House, which stands about 250 metres to the southeast.

Historical records identify this as a Condon castle, one of many fortifications that dotted the Cork landscape during the turbulent medieval period. The property changed hands in 1588 when it was granted to the Hyde family, marking a shift in ownership typical of the plantation era. Today, these ruins offer a tangible connection to centuries of Irish history, from medieval Gaelic lordships through to the social upheavals of the early modern period.
