Mooghaun Castle, Mooghaun South, Co. Clare

Built sometime in the medieval period, this tower house served as both a defensive stronghold and residence for local nobility. The castle’s strategic position in Mooghaun South allowed its occupants to maintain control over the surrounding landscape whilst providing the security necessary during turbulent times. Archaeological evidence suggests the site may have been occupied even earlier, with the castle potentially built upon older fortifications.

The structure itself exemplifies the typical Irish tower house design that became prevalent from the 15th century onwards. These vertical fortresses, with their thick stone walls and narrow windows, were perfectly suited to the unsettled conditions of late medieval Ireland. Mooghaun Castle would have originally stood several storeys high, with the ground floor typically used for storage whilst the upper levels housed living quarters for the lord and his family. The castle’s defensive features, including murder holes and battlements, speak to an era when raids and territorial disputes were commonplace throughout County Clare.

Today, the castle ruins offer visitors a tangible connection to Ireland’s complex medieval past. Though time and weather have taken their toll on the structure, enough remains to appreciate the engineering skills of its builders and the strategic importance of the site. The surrounding landscape, largely unchanged since medieval times, helps visitors imagine how the castle would have dominated this corner of Clare, serving as both a symbol of authority and a practical refuge during the countless conflicts that shaped Irish history.
