Rahaly Castle, Rahaly, Co. Galway

About four kilometres southeast of Ardrahan in County Galway's gently rolling farmland stands Rahaly Castle, a formidable tower house with a history stretching back to at least 1574, when records show it belonged to one Richard Burke.

This narrow rectangular tower rises five storeys high, measuring 5.1 metres in length and 10 metres in width, with an almost contemporary two-storey extension attached to its western side. The castle underwent extensive restoration beginning around 1970, when new floors and roofing were installed alongside several modern windows, breathing new life into this medieval structure whilst preserving its essential character.

The castle’s defensive features reveal the dangerous times in which it was built. The original eastern doorway still boasts a horizontal musket slot above it and a murder hole positioned directly inside; a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance in medieval Ireland. A spiral staircase in the southeast corner winds upwards through the tower, connecting small rectangular chambers on each floor, with the fourth floor originally topped by a stone vault. Look carefully at the southern wall and you’ll spot the garderobe chute exit about two metres above ground level, whilst machicolations at parapet level on the eastern and southern walls allowed defenders to rain down projectiles on attackers below.

The western extension, measuring 10 metres by 9.9 metres, contains architectural surprises of its own, including a magnificent stone vault between the ground and first floors. Hidden within the vault’s spandrel lies a concealed chamber, accessed through the eastern jamb of a window embrasure on the first floor’s southern wall. From here, a beautifully crafted spiral staircase descends to a long, narrow chamber running the entire length of the southern wall. The surviving windows throughout both structures are single-light openings with flat and round-headed slits, whilst those at first-floor level, positioned at the chamfered external corners of both tower and extension, feature particularly fine carved decoration. Remnants of the original bawn wall survive on the western and northern sides, complete with a circular turret at the northeast angle, whilst an 18th-century arched gateway stands approximately 40 metres southeast of the tower, marking a later addition to this centuries-old defensive complex.
