The castle’s exact history remains somewhat mysterious, though it was likely constructed by the Fitzgerald family, who held considerable power across medieval Cork. Today, visitors to this disused farmyard will find the interior of the ringfort thoroughly overgrown, with nature slowly reclaiming what centuries of human habitation once kept clear.

The most visible evidence of the castle’s former presence is an uneven, low mound in the southwest quadrant of the ringfort. Archaeological surveys conducted by Healy in 1988 identified this feature as a heap of rubble; the remains left after the castle’s walls were demolished at some point in the past. Whether this destruction came about through deliberate dismantling, neglect, or conflict remains unknown, though such fates were common for smaller fortified structures across Ireland as their defensive purposes became obsolete.

More recent farm buildings of no historical significance stand to the north of the site, themselves now abandoned and adding another layer to this landscape of rural decline. The combination of ancient ringfort, medieval castle ruins, and abandoned modern farm creates an evocative timeline of Irish rural history in one compact location. While little documentation survives about the castle’s active period, its placement within the earlier ringfort suggests a continuity of defensive importance at this site spanning potentially a thousand years or more.
