St. Davids Castle, Naas East, Co. Kildare

This three-storey fortified structure has managed to survive the centuries, though it’s undergone considerable modernisation along the way. Today, the castle sports a modern roof and wall-walk, whilst still retaining some of its medieval character in the form of a pointed barrel vault that spans the ground floor. A projecting stairs turret juts out from the southeast corner, providing access between the floors.

The castle’s transformation from medieval stronghold to modern dwelling reflects a common story across Ireland, where ancient structures have been adapted rather than abandoned. The extensive modernisation work has made it suitable for contemporary living, and the building is currently inhabited. Despite these updates, the castle maintains its imposing presence on the higher ground, a reminder of the strategic importance such elevated positions held in medieval Ireland.

According to architectural historian Bradley and colleagues, who documented the structure in 1986, St David’s Castle represents a typical example of how Ireland’s tower houses have evolved over time. These fortified residences, once essential for defence and status, have found new life as unique homes that bridge centuries of history. The combination of medieval features like the barrel vault with modern amenities demonstrates how historic preservation can work alongside practical adaptation.
