The northern wall and portions of the western wall still stand at approximately two metres high, though time hasn’t been entirely kind; much of the outer facing stones from the northern section have been removed over the centuries, likely repurposed for other local building projects. These walls once formed part of a defensive enclosure that protected the associated tower house, a fortified residence typical of late medieval Ireland.

The most intriguing feature is the angle tower at the northeast corner, which presents something of an architectural puzzle. With its interior diameter of roughly five metres and distinctive sloping base, known as a batter, this circular tower appears to be a later addition to the original structure. Rather than being properly bonded into the eastern bawn wall, it simply abuts the existing stonework, suggesting it was added during a subsequent phase of construction or restoration.

While the eastern bawn wall itself survives only in fragments, these ruins collectively paint a picture of how Irish landowners once fortified their homes. The bawn served as a protective courtyard where livestock could be secured during raids, whilst the tower house provided both residence and last line of defence. Today, these weathered stones at Rahaly stand as tangible links to Ireland’s turbulent past, when such fortifications were essential for survival in the countryside.
