The rectangular enclosure, measuring 35 metres east to west and 23 metres north to south, sits about 55 metres east of a stream that runs through the valley floor. What makes this site particularly intriguing is its sophisticated water management system; the moats surrounding all four sides are fed by natural springs located just to the east, with a carefully constructed channel directing overflow water from the southwest corner back towards the stream.

The site’s defences are impressive for their preservation and engineering. An earthen bank defines the eastern side and portions of the northern and southern boundaries, standing between 2 and 3.7 metres wide and rising up to 1.4 metres above the surrounding ground level. The moats themselves are flat-bottomed features, varying between 4 and 5.5 metres wide at the top and narrowing to 1.7 to 3.5 metres at their base, with depths reaching up to 1.8 metres. These water-filled ditches would have provided both a defensive barrier and potentially a source of fish for the inhabitants.

Within the protected interior, the ruins of a substantial stone building occupy the northern section of the enclosure. The structure’s walls, though now only standing about half a metre high and partially obscured by collapsed stone material, outline a rectangular building that once measured approximately 18 metres by 4.5 metres internally. First documented by Barry in 1977 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford, this moated site represents the type of defended farmstead that would have been home to Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families during the medieval period, combining practical agricultural needs with defensive considerations in an era when such precautions were essential.
