This moated enclosure at Garranstackle appears on the 1839 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a rectangular feature measuring approximately 50 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, though its western perimeter was already missing by the time cartographers arrived to document it.

Today, visitors to the site will find a square, grass-covered area measuring about 30 metres on each side, defined by the subtle depressions of what were once defensive moats. These earthworks have been largely backfilled over the centuries, leaving only faint traces of their original form. The northern moat remains the most visible, spanning 10 metres in width with a depth of about 30 centimetres, whilst the eastern moat is narrower at 3 metres wide and shallower at just 10 centimetres deep.

Moated sites like this one were typically constructed during the medieval period, often serving as defended farmsteads for Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families. The strategic positioning of this enclosure, elevated above the river valley yet accessible from the surrounding landscape, would have provided both defensive advantages and control over local resources. Though time and agriculture have softened its edges, the site remains a tangible link to Wexford’s medieval past, when such fortified homesteads dotted the countryside.
