Castle – ringwork, Castlerahan, Co. Cavan

High on a drumlin hill in Castlerahan, County Cavan, the remains of a medieval ringwork castle offer a glimpse into Ireland's turbulent past.

This impressive fortification consists of a raised rectangular platform, roughly 42 metres by 24 metres, standing about 4 metres high. The site is defended by two substantial banks made of earth and stone, with a wide, deep ditch running between them; a classic example of medieval defensive architecture that would have made any assault extremely difficult.

Within the enclosed area, archaeological investigations have revealed the foundations of several structures that hint at the castle’s original layout. In the southwest quadrant, the remains of a rectangular building measuring approximately 11 by 7 metres likely served as the main hall or residential quarters. At the northeast corner, a circular structure about 6.5 metres across may have functioned as a gatehouse, controlling access to the fortification. Another circular foundation in the southwest, roughly 11 metres in diameter, has been interpreted as the base of a defensive tower that would have provided both a vantage point and a last line of defence.

The site’s significance extends beyond its medieval origins. Adjacent to the southwest lies an 18th-century church, itself believed to have been constructed on or near the location of an earlier medieval church. This layering of historical periods, from medieval fortification to religious sites spanning centuries, demonstrates the enduring importance of this elevated position in the Cavan landscape. The combination of strategic location and substantial defensive works suggests this was once a significant stronghold, likely controlling the surrounding countryside during the medieval period.
