Castle – ringwork, Castletobin, Co. Kilkenny

On an east-facing slope in Castletobin, County Kilkenny, the remains of what appears to be an Anglo-Norman ringwork tell a story of medieval occupation spanning centuries.

This roughly square enclosure, measuring about 50 metres north to south and 53 metres east to west, was once defined by a bank and an impressively broad fosse; a deep, U-shaped defensive ditch that was 2 metres deep and 4 metres wide. Though the monument has been significantly altered over time, with ploughing levelling the enclosure and a new Callan-Kilkenny road cutting through its centre in 1974, archaeological investigations have revealed fascinating details about life within its boundaries.

When archaeologists examined the site before the road construction, they uncovered an extensive cobbled area covering much of the interior, suggesting this was once a well-maintained and actively used space. In the southeast quadrant, they found a 3-metre-wide well built with dry-stone walling, whilst the northeast section of the fosse contained the base of a small stone and mortar tower, with internal dimensions of less than 2 metres. These discoveries paint a picture of a fortified settlement with essential infrastructure for daily life and defence.

Pottery finds indicate that the primary occupation dates to the 13th century, likely making this an Anglo-Norman earthwork constructed during the early stages of the Norman colonisation of Ireland. The site wasn’t abandoned after its initial use, however; structural evidence and artefacts suggest it saw a second phase of habitation during late medieval or post-medieval times. Two old townland boundaries once ran along the eastern side and southern edge of the monument, following the public road, marking this location as historically significant in defining local territorial divisions.
