Castle – motte, Screeboge, Co. Longford

On the eastern edge of a north-south ridge in Co. Longford's pastureland, a curious circular mound rises from the landscape, offering commanding views across the surrounding countryside.

Castle - motte, Screeboge, Co. Longford

This steep-sided earthwork, measuring roughly 20 metres across at its base and standing between 1.3 and 2.6 metres high, bears the hallmarks of a medieval motte, though its exact history remains tantalisingly unclear. The summit, about 9 metres in diameter, contains a square depression measuring 4 metres on each side, surrounded by what appear to be old wall footings.

The structure’s past is intriguingly ambiguous. While it might be the remnants of a stone castle, the building shown on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map could equally have been a gazebo or summer house connected to Richmount Hill house, which stood just 60 metres to the southwest. The western face of the mound shows traces of what could be stone steps, whilst both the eastern and western sides display evidence of stone facing or revetment work; features that may date from later landscaping efforts rather than the original construction.

Adding to the mystery, a 1976 report mentioned an irregular platform to the south, defined by a barely visible earthen bank, which might represent the remains of a bailey if this was indeed a motte-and-bailey fortification. However, this feature could just as easily be another product of ornamental landscaping from the site’s later history. Without excavation, the true nature and full story of this Screeboge mound remains an open question, leaving visitors to imagine whether they’re standing on medieval defensive earthworks or the foundations of a Georgian folly.
