Castle – motte, Balreagh, Co. Westmeath

At the northern end of a natural ridge in Balreagh, County Westmeath, a medieval motte stands sentinel over the surrounding countryside, offering commanding views in every direction.

This circular earthwork, measuring approximately 30 metres across at its base and 20 metres at its summit, represents either a low motte or a raised rath; a fortified structure that once served as a defensive stronghold. The flat-topped platform sits within a shallow fosse (defensive ditch) and external bank, though these features have become less pronounced on the northeastern and southeastern sides over the centuries. Just 80 metres to the south-southeast, a church and graveyard bear witness to the site’s enduring importance in the local landscape.

The mound’s construction cleverly exploited the natural topography, with builders cutting a ditch across the northern end of the ridge and using the natural slope from west to northeast as an additional defensive feature. Evidence of a berm or terracing on the steep northern slope suggests careful engineering to maximise the site’s defensive capabilities. Today, the summit has a slightly dished appearance, roughly 14 metres in diameter, likely caused by 19th-century disturbance when the Ordnance Survey erected a concrete trigonometric station that still stands in the south-southwest quadrant of the mound.

The surrounding landscape tells its own story of continuous use through the ages. Ridge and furrow cultivation marks to the east of the motte lie within a small rectangular field bounded by a low earthen bank of uncertain date. Aerial photographs from 1968 to 1970 captured earthworks between the motte and the nearby graveyard, revealing landscape features that might otherwise go unnoticed from ground level. A slight ramp on the northeastern side appears to be a more recent addition, possibly created by livestock movement, whilst the Archaeological Survey of Ireland has documented the monument’s profile, preserving its dimensions and features for future study.
