At Boyanagh in County Roscommon, a medieval moated site occupies the crest of a gentle south-facing slope, its rectangular earthworks still clearly visible despite centuries of weathering.

The main enclosure measures approximately 49 metres east to west and 45 metres north to south, defined by substantial earthen banks that have become overgrown with vegetation over time. These defensive banks are most prominent along the western and northern sides, where they rise to about 5 metres in width and reach heights of up to 1.7 metres on their outer faces, whilst the southern and eastern boundaries are marked by scarps ranging from just under a metre to 1.7 metres high.

The site’s defensive character is further emphasised by the remains of an outer fosse or moat that once provided additional protection. This water-filled ditch, now largely silted up, can still be traced along the northern side and the western portion of the southern perimeter. The moat’s base spans between 2.3 and 3 metres across, though its depth varies considerably; barely 10 centimetres at the southern end but reaching up to 80 centimetres towards the north. A later field bank and drainage ditch now run along the western edge of the monument, likely added when the surrounding land was brought into agricultural use.

Such moated sites were typically constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries, often serving as fortified farmsteads for Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families. The grass-covered interior would have once contained timber buildings, perhaps a hall house and associated structures, all protected by the surrounding earthworks and water defences. Today, this quietly impressive monument stands as a reminder of medieval settlement patterns in rural Roscommon, its earthworks gradually softening into the landscape whilst still maintaining their distinctive rectangular footprint.
